March 18, 2011

AUSTIN, Texas-- Freshman Maya DiRado had her second-straight top-three finish, placing third in the 400 IM, while Kate Dwelley was sixth in the 200 free as Stanford dropped to fourth at the NCAA Championships following the second day of competition.

Cal leads the overall field with 295 points following three wins on Friday, followed by USC (253), Georgia (275), Stanford (192) and Arizona (184).

DiRado's time of 4:01.02 is the second-fastest in school history, as the freshman moved ahead of Olympic Gold medalist Summer Sanders (4:02.28) and was three seconds slower than 2010 NCAA Champion Julia Smit. She was the runner-up in the 200 IM yesterday with the school's third-fastest time.

Dwelley earned All-America status in the 200 free for the fourth time in her career, finishing sixth with a time of 1:44.16. It was the third time Dwelley had reached the A Finals.

Stnaford placed five women in the consolation finals, across five events.

Liz Smith in the 100 breast (11th), Andie Taylor in the 400 IM (14th) Betsy Webb in the 100 back (12th)  and divers Meg Hostage (13th) and Stephanie Phipps (16th)  in the three-meter all earned All-America certificates following consolation finishes.
