Bruins Overpower Cardinal

Stanford drops MPSF opener on the road

LOS ANGELES ā€“ No. 10 Stanford won the opening set at No. 2 UCLA, but the Bruins came back to defeat the Cardinal, 23-25, 25-21, 25-21, 25-19, Thursday, at Pauley Pavilion.

Stanford (7-7, 0-1 MPSF) hit .236 as a team, totaling 37 kills, 28 digs, four aces and 3.0 blocks.Ā  The Bruins, who hit .300 or better in all four sets, have won six straight against the Cardinal.

UCLA (11-3, 1-0 MPSF) was without First-Team All-America setter Andrew Rowan, who missed the match due to illness. Freshman Trent Taliaferro made his first collegiate start, setting the Bruin offense to a .416 clip.



Junior Theo Snoey led Stanford with 15 kills on .344 hitting, three aces, four digs and a block. Middle blockers Luke McFall and Kaumana Carreira together had 11 kills on 17 errorless swings, hitting .647 combined.



Setter Theoren Brouillette dished out 34 assists and had four digs. Libero Evan Porter tied for a match-high seven digs.

Opposite Moses Wagner turned in seven kills, three digs and an ace. Outside hitter Nate Clinton added four kills, seven digs and a block.



Three Bruins registered double-digit kills on the night. Outside hitter Cooper Robinson recorded a match-high 16 kills on .464 hitting. Outside hitter Zach Rama chipped in with 15 kills on a .387 attack percentage, while opposite Ida David posted 14 kills on .632 hitting, four aces, seven digs and two blocks.

Stanford and UCLA will square off again on Friday at Pauley Pavilion. First serve is scheduled for 7 p.m. on B1G+.
