STANFORD, Calif. — Richard Sherman, one of the most prolific cornerbacks in NFL history and a five-year standout at Stanford, is set to be inducted into the Senior Bowl Hall of Fame, as announced on Thursday morning by the Reese’s Senior Bowl.
A five-year Cardinal and one of the best two-way players in Stanford football history, Richard Sherman began his career as a wide receiver before transitioning to cornerback during his final two seasons on The Farm. As a wide receiver, he was the team’s leading receiver as a freshman and sophomore, compiling 81 receptions for 1,340 yards and seven touchdowns over 28 games on the offensive side of the ball. He was named First Team Pac-10 All-Freshman honors and honorable mention Freshman All-American honors from The Sporting News.
Sherman made the move to cornerback after a knee injury sidelined him for most of his junior season. In two seasons on the defensive side of the ball, Sherman made all but one start, recording 112 tackles and six interceptions. He was named Pac-10 All-Conference honorable mention following the season, which included an Orange Bowl victory and the first 12-win season in Stanford history (12-1).
Following his fifth season, Sherman was drafted in the fifth round of the 2011 NFL Draft by the Seattle Seahawks. He spent the first seven seasons of his career in Seattle, earning three First-team All-Pro nods and four Pro Bowl selections while leading the NFL in interceptions in 2013. He was an integral part of Seattle’s “Legion of Boom” defense, the secondary that led the NFL in pass defense in 2013 and 2014. After logging 35 interceptions from 2011-2019, Sherman was selected to the NFL 2010s All-Decade Team.
Sherman spent three seasons playing for the San Francisco 49ers, earning his fifth and final Pro Bowl selection in 2019. His final season in the NFL came in 2021 with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers.
Sherman won Super Bowl XLVIII with Seattle and appeared in two additional Super Bowls: XLIX with Seattle and LIV with San Francisco.
The 2025 Senior Bowl Hall of Fame Class is loaded with greats. Sherman will go into the Hall of Fame with Terron Armstead (Arkansas-Pine Bluff), Geno Atkins (Georgia), Jon Gruden (Dayton ’85), and Alex Mack (California). This year’s class will be inducted on Sunday, May 4, 2025.
With his induction into the Senior Bowl Hall of Fame, Sherman becomes the fourth person with Cardinal ties to be enshrined. Former Stanford greats Gene Washington and James Lofton were inducted in 1995 and 1996, respectively. Jim Harbaugh, the Bradford M. Freeman Director of Football from 2007-10, was inducted in 2017.
