NOTRE DAME, Ind. – The No. 17 Cardinal pounced for eight runs in the top of the first, and shut out Notre Dame to win 10-0 in five innings tonight. Stanford moved to 21-3 on the season and 6-1 in ACC play, thanks to Kyra Chan’s four-RBI day at the plate.
The Cardinal bats got going in a hurry, with six runs scored in the top of the first before the Irish recorded an out. Stanford batted around the lineup, with the inning featuring eight runs on five hits and four walks.
The first run came on a bases-loaded walk from Allie Clements – then Jade Berry and Chan followed it up with back-to-back two run singles to make it 5-0. Caelan Koch drove in one more with a double to make it 6-0, and the top of the order added two more. Emily Jones brought one home on an RBI single, and River Mahler made it an even 8-0 with a sacrifice fly.
Chung followed it up with a perfect bottom of the first for a shutdown inning.
The onslaught didn’t let up in the second inning. Chan led off with a home run to make it 9-0, improving her line to 2-for-2 with three RBI in just the first two innings.
Chan added to her day in the fourth, singling to score another run and make it a 10-0 Stanford lead. The junior finished the day 3-for-3 with four runs driven in and two scored.
Chung was sharp in the circle, tossing five shutout innings with just two hits allowed. The senior struck out three and walked two to move to 9-1 on the season.
Game two against the Irish is set for 1:30 p.m. PT tomorrow, and can be streamed on ACC Network.
