FEDERAL WAY, Wash. – With a victory by freshman Misha Andriyuk on the platform Wednesday, all three Stanford men’s divers advanced to the NCAA Championships.
Andriyuk routed the field at the NCAA Zone E Championships while scoring 813.90 points for 12 dives. That finished off Stanford’s three-for-three qualification performances, with Jack Ryan having qualified in the 1-meter and 3-meter dives – winning the latter – and Hunter Hollenbeck advancing in the 3-meter.
By qualifying in the platform, Andriyuk also earned a spot in the 1-meter at NCAA's.
Andriyuk, the Atlantic Coast Conference platform runner-up, was third after the prelims with 391.45, which carried over. In the final, Andriyuk had the highest scoring dives on four of his six efforts.
Andriyuk moved up to second on his first dive of the final, scoring 75.20 on a back 2 ½ somersault 1 ½ twist pike, to cut the deficit to Cal Baptist’s Mario Del Valle Jr. to 471.10-466.65.
On the next dive, the second of the final, Andriyuk took the lead for good, scoring 68.80 on an armstand back 2 somersault 1 ½ twist free, giving him a total of 535.45 to Cal’s Geoffrey Vavitsas with 513.50 in second after eight total dives.
Andriyuk’s biggest score came was 88.40 on a reverse 3 ½ somersault tuck with a 3.40 degree of difficulty on his penultimate dive.
Ryan, a senior, won his sixth Zone title and second in a row at 3-meter. On Tuesday, Ryan scored 856.55 to win, with Hollenbeck fifth at 758.70. The top six in each of the springboard events earned automatic qualifying spots for NCAA’s on March 26-29, also at the Weyerhaeuser Aquatic Center.
On Monday, Ryan also was second at 1-meter with 724.35 points.
