Leng's Career Leap

Stanford freshman cards best round heading into final day

WAIMEA, Hawaii — Jay Leng shot the best round of his young collegiate career on Friday, pushing the Stanford men’s golf team into the top-ten at the Amer Ari Intercollegiate heading into the final round of competition. The Cardinal is tied with Georgia Tech heading into Saturday’s final round at 25-under.

Leng, who turned in an impressive scorecard of 66 to jump 44 spots in the individual leaderboard, carded four birdies in the final nine holes spearheaded by his eagle on hole 15. The Cardinal freshman’s 6-under was the best round of his collegiate career, joining fellow teammate TK Chantananuwat in setting a round record this weekend.

Chantananuwat had a strong outing as well on Friday, shooting 5-under while splitting his six birdies evenly across the front and back nine. The freshman currently sits five back of leader Hampton Roberts (North Carolina) at 11-under par.

Brian Ma, who entered the round at 2-over, carded a 70 to take third on the Cardinal leaderboard during the round, battling a double-bogey in the front nine before turning in four birdies in his final eight holes to end the second round even through two rounds.

Ethan Gao and Nathan Wang improved on their first round totals, shooting 1-under on the afternoon. Gao had a strong start to the round, potting three birdies before a bogey on his final hole of the afternoon stopped the momentum. Wang, meanwhile, fought back from an early bogey and carded three birdies before trouble on hole four ended his afternoon. Logan Kim had a decent afternoon as well claiming two birdies to finish 2-over golfing independently.

Final round coverage from the Amer Ari Intercollegiate begins at 9:30 a.m. PT.
