GREENSBORO, N.C. – Stanford placed among the top four in each Day One final, opening its first Atlantic Coast Conference men’s swimming and diving championships in second as a team.
The Cardinal is tied for second with North Carolina State at 108 points as the five-day meet began at Greensboro Aquatic Center. Cal has the lead after the first three events, with 128 points.
Stanford earned season bests and NCAA ‘A’ cut times in both relays. In the 800-yard freestyle relay, the team of Andrei Minakov, Andres Dupont Cabrera, Ron Polonsky, and Henry McFadden was second in 6:08.70 – a season-best by seven seconds.
Here are the splits for each 200: Minakov in 1:32.38, Dupont Cabrera in 1:32.54, Polonsky in 1:33.14, and McFadden in 1:30.64. McFadden overtook Louisville and North Carolina State on the anchor to deliver a runner-up finish.
In the only individual event of the day, Stanford junior Jack Ryan placed fourth in 3-meter diving. Ryan, the Pac-12 champion at 1-meter and 3-meter last year, scored 394.65. Ryan, who led through five of the six rounds of the finals, scored highest on his fourth dive, a reverse 3 1/2 somersault tuck for 78.75.
In the first final of the men’s meet, Stanford placed fourth in the 200 medley relay in 1:22.74. The team was comprised of Aaron Sequeira (21.28) in backstroke, Polonsky in breaststroke (23.20), Minakov in butterfly (19.52), and Kaihan Gu (18.74) in freestyle.
Some of Stanford’s best events are Wednesday. Among the five finals are 1-meter diving, where Ryan is a favorite, and the 200 individual medley, where Polonsky is ranked No. 3. In the 500 free, McFadden is ranked No. 4.
