STANFORD, Calif. – Tess Heal scored a game-high 23 points off the bench, Brooke Demetre had her second career 20-point game with 21 and Stanford completed the weekend sweep with an 80-75 victory over Boston College on Sunday.
Demetre also added eight boards and a career-high five blocks in the win. Elena Bosgana had 15 points, four rebounds and four assists, while Mary Ashley Stevenson made her third consecutive start and had seven points, eight rebounds and a career-high five assists.
Stanford (13-12, 5-9) has now won consecutive games for the first time since it won three straight in late November.
The Cardinal led by as many as 10 early and had an 18-9 edge late in the first quarter when BC reeled off an 18-2 run to go up 27-20 early in the second. Stanford responded with a 7-0 spurt and with the Eagles up 31-29, the lead would change five times over the next three minutes as the teams traded 3-pointers.
The game’s final lead change came when Heal nailed one of her five triples to push the Cardinal in front by one, 38-37, with 2:28 remaining in the first half. BC would tie it 48-48 midway through the third quarter, but it was Heal again who answered with a three-ball and Stanford was in front the rest of the way.
Heal sealed the game with a pair of free throws with two seconds to go. The Cardinal held on despite not making a field goal over the final 3:44.
Demetre carried the Cardinal early, scoring nine of Stanford’s 20 in the opening period. She made her first four shots and had four blocks at halftime.
Stanford had 20 assists on its 30 made baskets and has put together two of its three 20-assist performances this season in the past two games. The Cardinal shot 51.7 percent from the floor (30-of-58) and 52.4 percent from beyond the arc (11-of-21). Stanford, which made double-digit 3-pointers in both games this homestand, hasn’t had back-to-back 10-triple outings since the season’s first three games.
The Cardinal is back on the road next weekend, beginning on Thursday, Feb. 20 at Virginia Tech. Tipoff is at 5 p.m. PT on ACC Network.
