STANFORD, Calif. - Winning eight of 10 bouts, No. 16 Stanford defeated Virginia, 34-9, on Sunday in Maples Pavilion.
It was the first ACC dual on The Farm for the Cardinal, which improved to 7-2 overall and 1-1 in conference meets. Virginia drops to 4-3, 0-2 ACC. Five of Stanford's eight wins came by bonus points.
No. 4 Lorenzo Norman opened the dual with a 20-5 technical fall over Michael Murphy at 174 pounds. The redshirt freshman has won nine consecutive matches, improving to 18-1 on the season. He is also 9-0 in duals and has seven technical falls this season.
The Cardinal added to its lead at 184 pounds as Tye Monteiro won by injury default over Justin Phillips. The redshirt freshman is 7-7 overall and 2-2 in duals.
Fifth year Nick Stemmet, ranked No. 24 at 197 pounds, defeated Steven Burrell Jr., 8-1, to pick up his third straight win and push the Stanford lead to 14-0.
Heavyweight Peter Ming made it 18-0 Cardinal with a 9-0 shutout of Gabe Christenson. Ming moves to 10-5 overall and 2-2 in duals this season.
Virginia got on the board as Stanford forfeited at 125 pounds - the Cardinal has not wrestled at this weight all season.
No. 6 Tyler Knox put six more points on the scoreboard for Stanford with a fall in 4:40 over Kyle Montaperto at 133 pounds. Knox, who is on a 10-match winning streak, tallied his third fall of the season as he improved to 18-2 overall and 9-0 in duals.
Sixth year Jaden Abas, ranked No. 7 at 149 pounds, posted his third win by major decision this seaosn, defeating No. 30 Jack Gioffre, 14-2. He is now 17-4 overall.
No. 29 Grigor Cholakyan added to Stanford's lead with a 4-1 decision over Nick Sanko at 157 pounds. The true freshman scored the winning takedown with 10 seconds remaining in the final period to improve to 13-6 overall and 7-2 in duals.
Redshirt sophomore Hunter Garvin, ranked No. 16 nationally, closed out the dual with a 4-1 decision over No. 19 Nick Hamilton at 165 pounds. Garvin moves to 12-6 on the season and 5-2 in duals.
Stanford takes a break from ACC action next week, traveling to Corvallis to face former Pac-12 foe Oregon State on Friday at 7 p.m. on Flowrestling.
