BERKELEY, Calif. – No. 2 Stanford closed out its weekend at the Cal Cup with a 14-7 victory over No. 8 Long Beach State on Sunday in Berkeley.
Stanford (4-0, 0-0 MPSF) received two goals apiece from Serena Browne, Ryann Neushul, Alissa Pascual and Sophia Sanders in another balanced scoring effort. This time around, it was 10 different players contributing a goal, as the Cardinal converted 50 percent (14-28) of its attempts.
For the first time this season, Stanford was playing from behind early on. Long Beach State led 3-2 after one period and later forced a 4-4 tie with 2:55 remaining in the second quarter.
The Cardinal then put the game away, responding with six unanswered goals while holding the Beach scoreless for a nearly 13-minute stretch that extended into the fourth quarter.
After Sanders’ first goal concluded the third period, Long Beach State finally broke through to make it 10-5 at the 6:04 mark of the fourth stanza.
Christine Carpenter played the first three quarters and finished with eight saves before Jackie King closed out the fourth period.
Stanford returns to action on Saturday, Feb. 8, facing Wager and Michigan at the Midwest Invite in Bloomington, Indiana.
