DALLAS – Relay teams continued to excel for the Stanford men’s swimming program as the 400-yard medley relay team became the fourth different Cardinal relay to earn an NCAA A cut time.
Competing Friday on Day Three of the four-day SMU Invitational at Robson & Lindley Aquatics Center, the team of Aaron Sequeira, Ron Polonsky, Andrei Minakov, and Rafael Gu won in 3:04.06, beating the A standard of 3:04.96.
Already, Stanford had made A cuts in the 800 freestyle relay, the 200 medley relay, and the 200 free relay.
Other Stanford winners Friday were sophomore Henry McFadden in the 200 free (1:32.59) with teammate Andres Dupont Cabrera right behind in 1:33.88.
In the 100 breaststroke, school record-holder Polonsky won in 51.21. In fourth was freshman Daniel Li in 52.72. In the prelims on Friday morning, Li was even faster, clocking 52.69 to debut in the Stanford all-time Top 15 list at No. 12. Getting knocked off the list was Keenan Newman, who swam 52.88 in 2007 to move into the No. 3 spot at the time.
In the day’s five events, Stanford swimmers won three events, set three personal bests, reached 19 NCAA B cuts, one NCAA A cut, and one Top 15 performance.
Personal bests were achieved by reached freshman Finn Harland in the 100 backstroke when he swam 46.79 in the prelims and placed fifth in the A final. Also, Josh Zuchowski was second in the 400 individual medley in 3:48.36. Jonathan Tan was sixth in the 200 free in a PB of 1:35.05.
In the 400 medley relay, Sequeira led off with a 100 back time of 45.57. Polonsky followed with a 51.82 split in the breast, with Minakov splitting the 100 butterfly in 44.70, and Gu anchoring with a 100 free split of 41.97.
Stanford concludes the four-team SMU Invitational on Saturday with six finals. In the team competition, the Cardinal holds a slim 690.5-666.5 lead over SMU, with Drury (519) and Hawai’i (370) next.
