TIBURON, Calif. – Competing in a professional event during the fall collegiate season, Nishesh Basavareddy raised the trophy at the Tiburon Challenger, winning 6-1, 6-1 over Eliot Spizzirri to win the event championship. The victory marked the first ATP Challenger title for Basavareddy.
Ranked in the top-200 in the world, Basavareddy stormed through the bracket with five wins, starting with a three-set win in the round of 32 over Bernard Tomic, 6-3, 4-6, 6-3. Next, the Carmel, Indiana native took out the event’s No. 7 seed, Brandon Holt, 6-2, 6-4, and Karue Sell, 7-5, 6-0, to reach the semifinals.
The strong play continued as the weekend arrived, with Basavareddy reaching the championship match after downing Jack Pinnington Jones, 6-2, 6-3. A rematch of the 2022 ITA Fall National Championship match, which Basavareddy also won, the Stanford junior claimed the title in one hour and one minute.
Stanford’s Kyle Kang and Nico Godsick also participated, with Kang winning a qualifying match against Kiranpal Pannu, 6-7 (4), 6-3, 7-6 (5) and Godsick appearing in both singles and doubles.
The Cardinal continues its fall slate with another professional event, the Kunal Patel SF Open, beginning on Wednesday, Oct. 9. Stanford’s next collegiate event will be the ITA Regional Championships, hosted by Washington from Oct. 17-22.
