SAN JOSE - Five players produced multi-goal outings as No. 3 Stanford never trailed in a 12-5 victory at No. 21 San Jose State on Saturday afternoon in the MPSF opener for both teams.
Stanford (11-3, 1-0 MPSF), which has won nine of its last 10 overall, built a 4-1 lead after one period and remained in control the rest of the way.
Christina Hicks finished with a team-high three goals on four attempts for the Cardinal, which held the Spartans scoreless on four power play opportunities and limited the hosts to 24.0 percent shooting.
Kamryn Barone, Maggie Hawkins, Avery Montiel and Sophia Sanders added two goals apiece while Sophie Wallace chipped in with her team-leading 32nd of the season.
Hicks' first goal of the match opened the scoring in the second period and gave Stanford its largest lead of the first half at 5-1.
Leading 6-3 at halftime, Stanford scored only once in the third quarter as San Jose State (6-7, 0-1 MPSF) creeped closer with a pair of goals.
The Cardinal closed out the game with a dominant fourth quarter, scoring five times while holding the Spartans scoreless.
Maya Avital started in goal and finished with five saves before giving way to Christine Carpenter for the final six minutes.
Stanford returns to action next weekend at the Aztec Invitational in San Diego, facing host San Diego State (March 9 at 3 p.m.) and Harvard (March 10 at 8:30 a.m.)
