STANFORD, Calif. - Stanford extended its winning streak to four games on Saturday afternoon, downing Army 17-8 at Cagan Stadium. The win marked the Cardinal's fourth-straight game scoring 17 goals or more while also allowing eight or less.
Stanford improves to 4-2 on the season while Army falls to 2-5.
The Cardinal came firing out the gates, scoring the first three goals of the game within two minutes of action. Two of those goals came from Aliya Polisky and it forced the Black Knights to call a timeout.
The first period ended with the Cardinal in control, holding a 7-3 advantage. However, the second quarter saw more offense for the visitors, and the game entered the halftime break with only one goal separating the two teams at 8-7 in favor of Stanford.
Stanford regained the momentum coming out of the halftime break, ending the game on a 9-1 run over the final two periods. The Cardinal offense added five goals in the third and four more in the fourth to put the game away.
Aliya Polisky led the team with four goals and added two assists for six points on the day. Two of the freshman's goals came from free position shots where she went 2-2.
Katy Gilbert was second in scoring against Army, recording a hat trick which included a free position goal. Two goals each from Annabel Frist, Jordyn Case, Sarah Jaques, and Jay Browne made it six Cardinal who scored multiple times on Saturday.
Defensively, Lucy Pearson was a force in goal for Stanford. The sophomore played all 60 minutes, making seven saves and allowing only eight goals while facing 21 total shots.
Stanford's hounding defense caused 10 of Army's 17 turnovers, led by Frist with two. Frist and Pearson also shared the team lead in ground balls with four each, helping the Cardinal to 19 total ground ball collections.
Frist added a strong performance in the draw circle, corralling seven draw controls to help lead Stanford to 14 in the game. Madison McPherson and Rylee Bouvier each added two as well.
Frist was also Stanford's top assist-getter on Saturday, dishing three. Stanford had 11 assists in total with two each coming from Jay Browne, Sarah Jaques, Jordyn Case, and Aliya Polisky as well.
Stanford returns to action next weekend on the road against Colorado as the team opens Pac-12 play.
