FEDERAL WAY, Wash. - No. 5 Stanford closed out night one at the Pac-12 Swimming & Diving Championships on the top step of the podium, claiming the 800 freestyle relay crown to cap off Wednesday evening's action. The Cardinal finished the night in 7th place with 64 points as California leads the team standings at 120 points heading into day two.
The quartet of Natalie Mannion, Lillie Nordmann, Aurora Roghair, and Kayla Wilson turned in a time of 6:53.33 to win the race by over three seconds, as the group posted the third-fastest 800 free relay time in the country. After Mannion and Nordmann collected a narrow lead in the opening two legs of the final, Roghair separated herself from the field with a 1:43.41 split before Wilson closed out the win with an anchor leg time of 1:42.87. Stanford has now won three consecutive conference titles in the 800 free relay.
Opening night action kicked off the night with the 200 yard medley relay, where Mannion, Lucy Thomas, Lucy Bell, and Amy Tang finished third with a time of 1:35.67, but were ultimately disqualified post-race.
The conference championships will continue tomorrow with the 500 free, 200 IM, 50 free and the 200 free relay. The divers will open up the diving portion of the meet with the 1-meter. The preliminaries begin at 10:30 am and the finals will start at 6:00 PM.
