BERKELEY, Calif. – Stanford dropped the away leg of the Cal doubleheader on Friday evening, falling to the rival Golden Bears, 5-1. The Cardinal still looks for its first America East win as they fall to 2-8 on the year, while California jumps to 4-5 this season.
Freshman Gemma Townsend continues to impress in her debut collegiate season as she notches Stanford's lone goal of the contest. Scout Butler, Puja Nanjappa, Caroline Guden, and Haley Mossmer also registered offensive attacks. Daisy Ford and Kendall Dowd split time in the net, tallying five and four saves, respectively. Scout Butler earned her second defensive save of the year in the contest.
Cal opened the scoring in the first period on a penalty corner, converting on a second effort as the Cardinal netminder couldn't corral the rebound. Stanford would find the equalizer in the second quarter, as Townsend found a wide-open net for her fourth goal of the year. Cal would jump ahead just before the half, converting on a penalty corner that extended beyond the halftime whistle.
Cal would add a pair of goals in the third quarter to extend their lead to three and closed it out with another score in the final frame. Cal's offensive pressure proved to be the difference maker throughout the contest, as Stanford trailed 19-8 in shots and was at an 8-3 disadvantage in penalty corners.
Stanford returns home to Varsity Turf on Sunday, as they will host Cal in a non-conference bout, as the program will celebrate Senior Day by recognizing Haley Mossmer and Caroline Guden. The action will air on Pac-12 Bay Area.
