STANFORD, Calif. - Freshman Matt Scott (3-0) allowed one run over six innings with a career-best six strikeouts, while sophomore Braden Montgomery drove in five runs as No. 9 Stanford (12-5, 3-2 Pac-12) defeated Oregon State (12-7, 1-4 Pac-12) 8-5 on Saturday to clinch a series victory.
Making his second career start, Scott worked into the seventh inning and threw 93 pitches. Scott exited the game after a leadoff single in the seventh inning, and that runner ultimately came around to score to put the only blemish on the right-hander's line.
Montgomery went 2-for-3 with a double and a home run to finish with the five RBIs for the Cardinal.
Junior Alberto Rios went 3-for-3 with a double and a walk while hitting out of the seventh spot in the order.
Junior Eddie Park also contributed for Stanford, putting together two hits in five trips to the plate while adding two RBIs - including an RBI-single in the bottom of the third to put the Cardinal on the board first.
Montgomery's two-run homer in the fourth extended the lead to 3-0 before he added a sac fly in the fourth to run the advantage to four.
The Cardinal scored four more in the sixth, including a two-RBI double from Montgomery, to open up an 8-0 cushion.
Oregon State managed to mount some offense down the stretch, scoring once in the seventh and eighth to cut the deficit to 8-2. The Beavers continued to push in the ninth, plating three runs on one hit while taking advantage of four walks, but the Cardinal managed to hold off the comeback bid.
