LUBBOCK, Texas – Fifth-year senior Max McKhann broke his own Stanford record in the 35-pound weight throw on Friday at Texas Tech's Sports Performance Center.

McKhann won the Matador Qualifier with a throw of 72-1 ¾ (21.99 meters), strengthening his chance of reaching the NCAA Indoor Track and Field Championships. He actually broke the school record twice in the meet.

Coming into Friday's competition, McKhann's 71-11 (21.92) from the Spokane Indoor Challenge on January 14 was the school standard. But McKhann broke that on his third throw, going 72-1 (21.97). He eclipsed that on his fifth attempt. McKhann now has broken the Stanford record four times, including once last year.

McKhann had three throws over 70 feet in the series. McKhann and former record-holder Adam Connolly (71-7 ¼ in 1999) are the only Stanford throwers in history over 70 feet.

McKhann entered the weekend in a four-way tie for 15th in NCAA Division I when only 16 advance to nationals based on best marks. His new mark would tie him for 14th, pending results from other meets this weekend. After this, there are two more weekends of qualifying. McKhann is hoping to advance for the second consecutive year.

Stanford brought three athletes to Texas Tech, and pole vaulter made a push for a personal best and a spot in the NCAA conversation, jumping 17-11 (5.46m), but falling short at 18-1 ¾ (5.52m), which may have put him in top-16 position.

Brown and teammate Max Manson were the only ones left after Texas Tech's Colton Naffziger went out at 17-1 ½ (5.22m). Brown cleared 17-6 ¼ (5.34m) on his first try and Manson on his second, but only Brown was able to get over 17-11, which would have been an indoor best for Manson.

At Notre Dame, Stanford brought four men to the Alex Wilson Invitational and will run in the distance medley relay for the first time this season on Saturday at the Loftus Sports Center. The Cardinal squad is comprised of Zane Bergen, Miles Zoltak, John Lester, and Charles Hicks.
