STANFORD, Calif. – A major decision by Nick Stemmet at 197 pounds was the difference in the dual, Sunday, as No. 20 Stanford defeated Penn, 16-15, in Maples Pavilion.

Stanford, which never trailed in the dual, improved to 3-3 on the season as both teams won five bouts.

The dual began at 165 pounds as true freshman Hunter Garvin registered an 11-9 decision over Penn's Lucas Revano. With Garvin leading 9-7 going into the final period, Revano scored an escape to cut it to 9-8. However, Garvin tallied his third takedown of the match to seal the win.

Tyler Eischens, who is ranked No. 27 nationally, added to the Cardinal lead with a 7-4 decision over No. 19 Nick Incontrera at 174 pounds. The redshirt senior scored six of his seven points in the second period, tallying four near fall and a reversal. It was his third ranked win of the season as he improves to 16-4 overall and 5-1 in duals.

Stemmet's 11-3 major decision over No. 33 Cole Urbas at 197 pounds made the team score 10-3 in favor of the Cardinal. Ranked No. 22, Stemmet led 4-1 heading into the final frame. He chose neutral and went to work, scoring three more takedowns and tacked on riding time to secure the major. He is now 15-4 overall, 5-1 in duals and has five ranked-wins this season.

Heavyweight Peter Ming upset No. 27 Ben Goldin, 6-2, to give Stanford a 13-3 lead in the dual. Leading 3-2 in the third period, Ming scored his second takedown of the match and finished on top to add the riding time point to the final score. It was the second ranked win of the season for the junior, who moves to 10-8 overall. 

Penn reeled off three straight wins to cut the Stanford lead to 13-12 with two bouts remaining.

Redshirt junior Jaden Abas, ranked No. 22 at 149 pounds, knocked off No. 10 Doug Zapf with a 3-2 decision to win his 10th straight match. Abas scored a takedown in the opening period and led 3-1 going into the third. Zapf chose down and notched an escape to cut it to one, but Abas was able to get out of several late scrambles to earn the victory. He is now 18-3 overall and 5-1 in duals.

Stanford remains on The Farm next week, opening Pac-12 Conference action against No. 12 Arizona State. The dual is set for Noon on Sunday, Jan. 22 in Burnham Pavilion.
