STANFORD, Calif. – Spencer Jones scored a season-high 25 points, but Stanford men's basketball was tripped up by Colorado, 73-70, after a back-and-forth contest at Maples Pavilion on Thursday night.
Jones tallied his eighth-career 20-point outing, making seven field goals, including three triples, and a perfect 8-for-8 mark from the free throw line. The senior became the program's 50th member of the 1,000-point club, and moved into 49th on the program's all-time scoring list. He also grabbed a team-best six rebounds to go with two steals and two blocks.
Brandon Angel joined Jones in double figures with 10, while Ryan Agarwal had nine and Maxime Raynaud eight. Stanford shot 14 for 28 before the break with five threes and led 37-33 at halftime.
K.J. Simpson scored a career-high 31 points including the final 11 for Colorado. It was Simpson's second 30-plus point game of the season. His layup with 18 seconds remaining gave Colorado a 71-70 lead and he sealed it with two free throws with three seconds left. Stanford missed a late 3-point shot at the buzzer for the chance to tie it.
Colorado led early, 17-8, with 12:54 before halftime before Jones responded with his own 11-0 run for the Cardinal and a 19-17 lead. Jones made a pair of 3-pointers in three consecutive possessions, a layup off his offensive rebound and another three, surpassing the 1,000-point threshold in the first half.
Stanford returns to action on Saturday, Dec. 31 at 1 p.m. against Utah. The action will air on Pac-12 Networks.
