Stanford Outlasted by No. 7 Texas

DALLAS – Michael Jones had 17 points, but Stanford was outlasted by No. 7/8 Texas, 72-62, on Sunday at American Airlines Arena, home of the Dallas Mavericks. The contest marked the second consecutive season Stanford played Texas in the Pac-12 Coast-to-Coast Challenge.

Michael Jones made five of his 10 attempts from the floor, including two triples, and hit five free throws to lead the Cardinal attack. Brandon Angel and Spencer Jones ended the afternoon in double figures with 11 and 10 points, respectively, with Jones contributing a game-high seven rebounds and three blocks.

The matchup marked a homecoming for Dallas natives Harrison Ingram and Ryan Agarwal, with Ingram finishing with five points, six rebounds and four assists.

Stanford jumped out to an early 11-5 lead after a three from Max Murrell, but the Longhorns responded with a run to lead by five in the opening half, 22-17. The Cardinal rallied to re-level the scorer, 26-26, while Texas led at the intermission, 31-28.

The second half was marked by a pair of runs – one for each side. Texas led by as many as 15, 55-40, with 12:10 to play, but Stanford responded with a 16-4 run to cut the deficit to three, 59-56, with 6:27 to play. The Longhorns iced the game with four jumpers late, as the Cardinal ran out of time to continue the push.

Stanford returns to action on Thursday, Dec. 22 in Santa Cruz, California against Loyola Chicago. The 7 p.m. tip will air on Pac-12 Networks.
