COLLEGE PARK, Md. – Stanford field hockey traveled away from campus for the first time this season, but dropped a tightly-contested battle to No. 4 Maryland, 1-0, on Monday afternoon. The Cardinal moves to 1-1 this season, while the Terrapins improved to 2-0.
Freshman Daisy Ford tallied a career-high 11 saves in goal, marking the most saves by a Stanford goalkeeper since Kelsey Bing had 12 saves against Michigan on Sept. 6, 2019, and the most saves by a Stanford netminder in a regulation length contest since Bing recorded 13 against Michigan on Oct. 8, 2017.
The Cardinal offense tallied four shots against the Terrapins, with Lynn Vanderstichele, Chantal Eiwanger, Molly Redgrove and Caroline Guden mustering efforts at the Maryland net. Stanford tallied two penalty corners as compared to eight for the host Terrapins.
Maryland struck for the game-winning goal in the first quarter after a penalty corner shot found the lower corner. The Cardinal would successfully defend seven corners the rest of the way.
Stanford found itself with a two-player advantage in the closing minutes, but the Maryland defense held on without giving the Cardinal a clean look at a goal.
The Cardinal returns to campus on Friday for the first of three-consecutive matches on the Varsity Turf, hosing Indiana on Sept. 2 at 11 a.m. The contest will be broadcast on Pac-12 Insider.
