Season Comes to Close

OMAHA, Neb. – Stanford's season came to an end with a 6-2 loss to No. 14 Auburn in the 2022 Men's College World Series, Monday at Charles Schwab Field. The Cardinal concludes the season with a 47-18 record after returning to Omaha for the second consecutive season.

Stanford opened the game with runs in the first and second innings to take a 2-0 lead. Brock Jones singled up the right side and stole second to put a runner in scoring position. Brett Barrera hit a deep double to left-center to push Jones across the plate for the opening run and the first Cardinal lead in Omaha.

In the second inning, Adam Crampton doubled down the left field line, hitting the chalk with the call being upheld after a crew chief review, to plate Tommy Troy for the early 2-0 lead. In total, Stanford hit three doubles over the first two frames – ending the day with four doubles.

Auburn (43-21) took the lead with a four-run top of the sixth and added a pair of runs in the seventh. A bases-loaded walk brought the first run across the plate, and a two-out bases clearing double from Cole Foster put the Tigers up 4-2.

Stanford threatened to tie the game by loading the bases in the bottom of the seventh thanks to a Crampton double, Jones getting on base the hard way, and a single from Carter Graham to put Barrera – who has hit two grand slams this season – at the plate. The junior struck out to end the Cardinal rally.

Crampton ended the day 3 for 3 with a pair of doubles, while Jones was 1 for 4 with a run scored. Drew Dowd struck out six over 4.0 innings in a no decision.

Junior Quinn Mathews was saddled with the loss after allowing six runs on six hits and two walks over three innings. The lefty dropped to 9-2 with the setback.

The 2022 season marks the first time that Stanford has gone 0-2 at the College World Series.
