TEMPE, Ariz. - No. 25 ASU defeated No. 22 Stanford on Friday, 18-11. This marked ASU's first victory against the Cardinal, moving the all-time series to 9-1 in favor of Stanford.
The Cardinal moves to 8-6 on the season and 6-2 in conference games. ASU improves to 6-6 and 4-2 in Pac-12 play.
The game started fast on offense for both teams as there were nine total goals in the first period. Galen Lew got the scoring started with an impressive run and strike in open play.
Caitlin Chicoski added a goal and Ashley Humphrey netted two of her four goals in the quarter as well, making it four Stanford goals to ASU's five.
Ashley Humphrey led the team in assists and goals during the game, with six total points. She scored four goals and dished two assists on the evening.
The Sun Devils stifled the Stanford attack in the second quarter, only allowing one goal while tallying four of their own. Ali Baiocco's 39th goal of the season was the lone Cardinal strike in the second period, making it 9-5 in favor of ASU heading into half.
Galen Lew scored two goals in the game for the second-most on the team and she added 10 draw controls to pace all players. Caitlin Chicoski tied Lew with two strikes of her own in the game as well.
The third period mirrored the first, with Stanford scoring four and ASU tallying five. Annabel Frist and Sarah Jaques each scored a third quarter goal making it six total Stanford players recording a goal in the game.
The fourth quarter began with a burst of offense from Galen Lew's second goal of the game, but Stanford was unable to spark a comeback. The quarter finished with two goals for the Cardinal and four more for the hosts.
Kara Rahaim recorded eight saves in the game and led the team with four ground balls. Stanford added four caused turnovers from four different players in the game.
The Cardinal will look to bounce back against #13 USC in Los Angeles on Sunday.
