STANFORD, Calif. – Former Auburn associate head coach Alex Dunphy has been named assistant coach for the Stanford women's volleyball program, as announced by head coach Kevin Hambly.
"I am excited to welcome Alex Dunphy to the Stanford women's volleyball program," said Hambly. "Alex is a tireless worker who brings tremendous experience and knowledge to The Farm. She knows how to recruit to a championship-level program, and has an excellent mind for volleyball."
Dunphy replaces Courtney Thompson, who served as an assistant for the 2021 season, and will take over the Kimberly and Beverly Oden Assistant Coach title.
Dunphy comes to The Farm after spending the past two seasons at Auburn. Last season, she helped guide the Tigers to the most program wins since 2017 and the most SEC victories since 2018. Auburn's 6-0 start to the 2021 season was its best since 2012.
"I want to thank Kevin for this incredible opportunity," said Dunphy. "I have great respect for Kevin as a person and coach, and I am thrilled to join the Stanford women's volleyball program. I look forward to working with the student-athletes and staff to continue Stanford's tradition of volleyball excellence."
Prior to her time at Auburn, Dunphy served as an assistant coach at her alma mater, USC, during the 2018 and 2019 campaigns. She helped lead the program to consecutive NCAA second round appearances and a runner-up finish in the Pac-12 in 2018.
Before joining the Women of Troy, Dunphy served as the assistant director of operations and video coordinator at Minnesota in 2017. She had previously been an assistant coach at Pepperdine (2014-16) and also served as an assistant coach at Miami in 2013. Prior to her stop in Miami, Dunphy held the office of director of operations with the Pepperdine men's volleyball program.
Dunphy grew up in Malibu and is the daughter of Hall of Fame coach Dr. Marv Dunphy who headed the men's program at Pepperdine for four decades. He won multiple medals as a member of the USA Men's and Women's National Team coaching staffs, including gold medals at the 1988 Olympics in Seoul and the 2020 Olympics in Tokyo.
"Alex can do so many things to help the program," added Hambly. "Between her and Mike [Johnson], I have two professional coaches that will help us prepare the team at a high level and offer a great student-athlete experience."
Dunphy has extensive experience with USA Volleyball. In July of 2021, she was an assistant coach for USA Volleyball U15/16 National Team Development Program. She also added a stint as an assistant coach for USA Volleyball U16/U17 National Team Development Program in December of 2021.
In December 2019, Dunphy served as an assistant coach for the Girls Youth Holiday Training Program at the Olympic Training Center in Colorado Springs, Colorado. She was the technical coordinator for the USAV Collegiate National Team in the summer of 2017, when the squad competed in Thailand and was an assistant coach for the 2016 USAV Collegiate National Team that competed in China.
Dunphy also served as the Head of Delegation for the 2012 U.S. Women's Junior National Team during the squad's run at the NORCECA U20 Continental Championship in Managua Nicaragua. That year, Team USA won bronze medals and earned a bid to the 2013 FIVB Women's Junior Continental Championship.
Dunphy played collegiately for the Women of Troy in 2003 and 2004, winning an NCAA title as a freshman. She graduated from USC with a degree in communication from the Annenberg School for Communication and Journalism in 2007. She earned her master's degree in communication from Pepperdine in 2015.
