STANFORD, Calif. – Stanford began its outdoor track & field campaign on Saturday, hosting the Cardinal Classic at rainy Cobb Track and Angell Field. The Cardinal posted 11 wins during the one-day meet, as five meet records fell throughout the day.
The highlight of the day might have not included any collegiate runners, as Cooper Teare (13:06.73) and Cole Hocker (13:08.55) both hit world championship qualifying marks in the final event of the day, the men's 5,000m invitational. That broke the meet record by almost 24 seconds and was just off the pace of the facility record.
Stanford's highlight of the day came as freshman Udodi Onwuzurike set the meet record in winning the 200m with a time of 21.04, tied for the sixth-best in school history. Onwuzurike was making his outdoor debut and also anchored the winning 4x100 relay team.
The Cardinal picked up six more wins on the men's side: Dorien Simon won the 100m in a time of 10.62; John Lester won the 1,500m in his debut with a time of 3:45.50; J.T. Herrscher won the pole vault with a mark of 16-6 ¾ (5.05m); Allan Hunter won the long jump with a mark of 24-0 ¼ (7.32m); Keyshawn King's mark of 50-8 ¼ (15.45m) won the triple jump; and Sam Liokumovich won the shot put with a throw of 54-8 (16.66m).
On the women's side, Stanford won three events: the 4x400 relay with a time of 3:54.64; the shot put with Jordan Fong's winning throw of 43-4 ½ (13.22m); and Virginia Miller's winning javelin throw of 169-8 (51.71m).
Next up for the Cardinal is the Stanford Invitational on April 1-2.
