Griffith, Woods Advance to Quarters

DETROIT - Redshirt juniors Shane Griffith and Real Woods have advanced to the quarterfinals of the NCAA Championships, Thursday, at Little Caesars Arena.

Woods, the No. 4 seed at 141 pounds, registered a pair of major decision victories. The Albuquerque, New Mexico, native has not given up a point in his past four matches. He opened the tournament with an 8-0 major decision over Connor McGonagle of Lehigh and posted another 8-0 major decision against Purdue's Parker Filius in the Round of 16. 

Woods is now 16-1 on the season and will face CJ Composto (Penn), the No. 12 seed), in the quarterfinals on Friday morning.

The defending NCAA champion and No. 5 seed at 165 pounds, Griffith began the day with a dominating 18-2 technical fall in 5:13 over Minnesota's Cael Carlson. Griffith advanced to the quarterfinals with a 7-3 decision over No. 12 seed Zach Hartman (Bucknell), who he faced in the semifinals last year.

The Westwood, New Jersey, native improves to 17-4 on the season and will wrestle No. 4 seed Dean Hamiti of Wisconsin on Friday.

Wrestling in his first NCAA Championships, redshirt junior Tyler Eischens, the No. 26 seed at 174 pounds, upset No. 7 seed Ethan Smith of Ohio State, 13-12, in the first round. He then dropped a 13-4 major decision to No. 10 seed Clay Lautt of North Carolina to fall into the consolation bracket. He will meet No. 8 seed Michael O'Malley of Drexel on Friday.
 


The No. 23 seed at 149 pounds, returning All-American Jaden Abas came up short in his opening match to No. 10 seed Ridge Lovett of Nebraska, 4-2. He bounced back with a 9-3 decision against Missouri's Josh Edmond and will face No. 9 seed Kaden Gfeller of Oklahoma State on Friday morning. Abas defeated Gfeller, 15-6, when the two wrestled in a dual at Stanford on Nov. 13.

The No. 33 seed at 125 pounds, Logan Ashton recorded a 2-0 decision against Virginia's Patrick McCormick in a pigtail match. He then dropped a 16-3 major decision to No. 1 seed Nick Suriano of Michigan and fell short to No. 16 seed Drew Hildebrandt of Penn State, 3-1, ending his tournament run.  

The action from Detroit continues on Friday at 8 a.m. PT on ESPNU and the WatchESPN app. As a team, Stanford sits in 19th place with 9.0 points.
