Victory at Vermont

BURLINGTON, Vt. – Opening America East action on the road, Stanford field hockey picked up a 1-0 win over Vermont on Friday afternoon at Moulton Winder Field. The Cardinal improves to 2-2 (1-0 AE), while the Catamounts fall to 6-3 (0-1 AE).

Haley Mossmer scored for the third consecutive game, giving her a team-leading three goals this season. Molly Redgrove dealt her second assist of the season, while Cara Sambeth and Caroline Guden each registered a defensive save. Sambeth leads the country with six defensive saves this season.

"The team was very connected in our structure and game plan," said head coach Roz Ellis. "Vermont is a strong defensive team, you have to trust your teammates to keep chipping away like they did. I am very proud of the outcome and how we grew today."

The Cardinal held Vermont to just one shot in the opening half, while firing three of its own. Mossmer tallied the game's only shot on goal in the opening period, but the Catamounts made the save.

Mossmer broke the deadlock with five seconds remaining in the third quarter, skillfully tipping a pass from Redgrove up and over the goalkeeper. Stanford held a 1-0 lead throughout the remainder of the contest, and defended a late penalty corner with just 24 seconds on the clock to hold on for the victory.

Stanford continues its campaign on Sunday, Sept. 26 at Maine. The action gets underway at 9 a.m. PT, and will be broadcast on ESPN+.
