HOUSTON, Texas – Stanford women's swimming and diving added its third individual Pac-12 title of the weekend to finish second in the team race, Saturday at the Pac-12 Women's Swimming and Diving Championship.
The Cardinal's 1445 points were only 74.5 points behind Cal's 1519.5 – making this the closest team race since 2013, when Stanford won the team title by 21 points (1439.5 to 1419.5).
"What a great week for our team," said the Paul A. Violich Director of Women's Swimming Greg Meehan. "Through all the challenges our team has faced this year, I'm not sure they could have done anything else to win this meet. Congrats to Cal, they have a phenomenal team and I'm proud we were able to battle with them all the way to the end."
Morgan Tankersley opened the night by defending her conference title in the 1650 free, swimming 16:03.27. Isabel Gormley finished third in a lifetime best of 16:11.44 to also reach the podium for 59 total team points.
Stanford has now won the last five Pac-12 titles in the event.
The Cardinal also picked up podium finishes in the 200 breast and the 200 fly to bring their total on the day to four. Allie Raab swam 2:07.31 to finish third in the 200 breast, just ahead of Zoe Bartel's fourth-place effort in 2:08.26. Hannah Kukurugya took third in the 200 fly in 1:56.29.
With the conference championships now in the rearview mirror, Stanford will continue its preparation for the NCAA championships, March 17-20 in Greensboro, N.C. The psych sheets for the national championships will be announced on March 3.
