No. 24 Stanford beat UC Davis 18-10 on Saturday at Cagan Stadium to earn its second win of the season.
"I believe our team win today was a culmination of a good week of focused practice, and I'm excited for the next week ahead of us," said head coach Danielle Spencer.
With her 228th career draw control during today's game, Genesis Lucero now holds the Stanford career record for draw controls, passing Julia Massaro (2019) on the all-time list. Lucero had a total of eight draw controls against the Aggies.
"Genesis works hard daily with a growth mindset," said Spencer. "I'm really happy for her on this accomplishment, and I am immensely proud to be her coach."
Katherine Gjertsen and Mikaela Watson led the Cardinal with five goals each. Gjertsen scored all five of her goals in the second half. The Cardinal also had goals from Galen Lew (3), Ali Baiocco (2), Jay Browne (1), Caitlin Chicoski (1) and Jacie Lemos (1). Goalkeeper Trudie Grattan totaled seven saves.
Stanford got out to an early lead with a goal from Baiocco within the first minute after the opening draw control. Watson followed by scoring her first goal of the day to give the Cardinal a 2-0 lead.
After UC Davis scored their first goal, Stanford went on a run, scoring four-straight to make it 6-1. The Aggies answered by scoring three of their own, cutting the Cardinal's lead to two.
Each team scored two more before the half, bringing the score to 8-6.
Coming out of the break, Gjertsen scored two quick goals, followed by one from Watson to give Stanford the 11-6 lead. The Aggies answered with one, before Lemos and Gjertsen each scored to make it 13-7.
Stanford never looked back, scoring five more goals to UC Davis' two, bringing the final score to 18-10.
The Cardinal held the advantage in shots (38-21), ground balls (19-14) and draw controls (19-11).
Stanford (2-2, 0-0 Pac-12) returns to action next Sunday, March 1 at 10:00 am PT when it travels to No. 6 Northwestern.
