SAN FRANCISCO – Catarina Macario's first career hat trick powered No. 3 Stanford to a dominant 9-0 win at San Francisco on Sunday at Negoesco Stadium.
"It's never easy to play away from home and I was proud of the way we came out from the first whistle and attacked," said the Knowles Family Director of Women's Soccer Paul Ratcliffe, who registered his 300th career win at Stanford one week ago. "This team is growing and getting better with every training session. They want to be a championship team and it's showing on the field."
Macario continued her exceptional start to the season with her fourth multi-goal game in five appearances, giving her nine talies on the season. Madison Haley set up three goals, Belle Breide scored and set up a pair and the duo of Carly Malatskey and Beattie Goad finished with one goal and one assist apiece. Sophia Smith scored in her first appearance of the season while Sam Tran and Maya Doms scored, the latter of whom netted her first career goal. Lauren Rood also earned her first shutout of the season, finishing with a pair of saves as The Cardinal (5-0-0) outshot the Dons (4-1-0), 29-5.
Macario wasted no time putting Stanford in the lead, burying her first of the afternoon in the second minute after Haley and Beattie Goad orchestrated a beautiful build up through the Dons' midfield. After Macario struck the woodwork from a free kick in the seventh minute, Malatskey put away her fifth of the season, making it 2-0 as Briede teed her up in space on the counter attack.
Nine minutes later, Beattie Goad slotted home following yet another breathtaking build up from the Cardinal with Haley and Briede at the heart of the move. Minutes later, Macario pounced on a throw-in and scored her second of the game to push the lead to four.
After the break, Briede netted in the 47th minute with Haley picking up her third assist of the day. Moments later, Macario completed her hat trick after picking a San Francisco defender's pocket, racing toward the goal and dribbling around the goalkeeper before tapping home.
Macario hit the post for the third time before Sam Tran's first goal of the season in the 69th minute. Tran won a penalty kick and slammed home the spot kick for push the lead to 7-0. Doms got on the scoresheet for the first time in her career in the 82nd minute, burying the rebound off of Malatskey's dangerous attempt.
Smith put a bow on the evening in the 85th minute, collecting Sierra Enge's perfectly-weighted ball on the counter attack and beating the goalkeeper at the near post. It was the second time in three seasons the Cardinal has scored nine goals and ties for the most since Stanford's 10-0 win over USC on Oct. 9, 1993.
No. 3 Stanford returns to action on Friday when it faces Pepperdine in Malibu, California, at 3 p.m., followed by a visit to UC Santa Barbara at 1 p.m. on Sunday.
