Five Silvers for Cardinal

STANFORD, Calif. - Stanford's trio of Robert Neff, Brody Malone and Grant Breckenridge combined to earn five silver medals at the 2019 Pan American Games in Lima, Peru.

Neff led the way, as the former Cardinal took silver on floor exercise and pommel horse after combining with Malone and Breckenridge to earn a silver medal in the team competition.

Neff registered a score of 14.166 to place second on the floor behind Chile's Enrique Tomas Gonzalez (14.600). Colombia's Andres Martinez (14.100) captured the bronze medal. With one silver medal already in hand, Neff returned to competition to post a 13.466 on pommel horse to claim his second individual medal. Brazil's Francisco Carlos Barretto took gold with a score of 13.533, while Colombia's Carlos Alberto Calvo took third with a mark of 13.233.

Prior to the individual event finals, both Malone (80.450) and Neff (79.700) competed in the all-around finals on Monday night, with the duo finishing fifth and seventh, respectively. Malone, a rising sophomore at Stanford, competed in two other event finals, placing fourth in the pommel horse (12.766) and fifth in parallel bars (13.533).

During the team competition on Sunday night, the U.S. scored a team total of 249.400 to take second to Brazil's 250.450. Canada took bronze with a score of 246.725. The second-place finish for the U.S. men marked the team's fifth Pan American Games silver medal in men's gymnastics. The USA had the top event scores for floor exercise and pommel horse, with the second best on vault and parallel bars. Neff and Malone both competed in the all-around during team competition, with Neff capturing the top overall score of 82.350. En route to qualifying for the floor exercise finals, Neff registered the top score in the event (14.050) on Sunday. Similarly, Malone registered the top mark on the pommel horse (14.500) during the team competition.

The next premier event for USA Gymnastics is the 2019 U.S. Championships in Kansas City, Mo., from August 8-11. Former Cardinal Akash Modi and Eddie Penev are among the senior men set to compete, while incoming freshmen J.R. Chou, Riley Loos and Zachary Martin are among the junior men's field.
