STANFORD, Calif. – Sophomore Michaela Gordon was named Stanford's first Pac-12 Singles Player of the Year since 2012, highlighting the Cardinal's all-conference selections on Tuesday.
One year after being tabbed the Pac-12 Freshman of the Year, Gordon was recognized as Stanford's first Pac-12 Singles Player of the Year since Nicole Gibbs in 2012. The Cardinal's highest-ranked singles player at No. 24, Gordon (22-9 overall, 14-4 duals) has played all but three of her matches at the top spot of the lineup. Gordon, who has won seven in a row and 11 of her last 12 overall, is 11-7 against ranked opponents and 13-1 against Pac-12 foes. Gordon has also been selected to compete in the NCAA Singles Championships.
Joining Gordon as an All-Pac-12 selection were seniors Caroline Lampl and Melissa Lord, with Stanford accounting for three of the six spots on the conference's first team. Lampl was named to the second team in 2017 and honorable mention in 2018, while Lord was appointed to the second team in each of the last two seasons.
Ranked No. 66 nationally, Lampl (29-6 overall, 20-0 duals) is one of the nation's hottest players, having won 22 in a row since her last loss back on Jan. 18. Competing mainly at the No. 3 position, Lampl ranks second on the squad in overall victories and is 8-5 against ranked opponents and 14-1 versus Pac-12 foes. Lampl, who is 13-2 all-time in NCAA team competition, is the Cardinal's winningest active player with 105 career victories.
Ranked No. 29 nationally, Lord (24-9 overall, 17-4 duals) has been a consistent force at the No. 2 spot of the lineup. Lord has won 14 of her last 16 matches overall, posting a 9-7 record against ranked foes and an 11-2 mark against Pac-12 opponents. Lord, who has also booked a spot in the NCAA Singles Championships, is three wins shy of 100 for her career and owns a reputation as one of Stanford's most clutch performers with a 16-1 all-time record in NCAA team play, including the 2018 NCAA clincher against Vanderbilt.
Junior Emily Arbuthnott (31-5 overall, 18-2 duals) landed a spot on the conference's second team after earning honorable mention status as a sophomore. Ranked No. 44, Arbuthnott leads the Cardinal in overall victories and has lost only twice since Nov. 9. Competing at the No. 4 spot, Arbuthnott is 7-5 against ranked opponents and 12-2 against Pac-12 foes. Arbuthnott has clinched a team-best nine matches, increasing her career total to 27. She is also 9-2 in three-setters this season and 21-4 for her career. Arbuthnott will also participate in the NCAA Singles Championships.
No. 3 Stanford hosts No. 14 Kansas on Friday, May 10, at 2 p.m. in the NCAA round of 16 at Taube Family Tennis Stadium. Admission is free, with the winner advancing to the USTA National Campus in Orlando, Florida, where the nation's final eight teams will compete for the NCAA title May 17-19. Stanford has won 61 of its last 64 matches on The Farm.
Riding a 19-match winning streak as one of the hottest teams in the country, Stanford (24-1, 10-0 Pac-12) is also 46-5 during the month of May since 2010, a stretch that has produced four NCAA titles (2010, 2013, 2016, 2018).
The most decorated program in college history and the winningest program on The Farm, Stanford has won 19 of the possible 37 NCAA championships. Stanford owns a 155-19 all-time record in the postseason since the NCAA Tournament went to its present format in 1982. The Cardinal has won 20 national titles overall in school history, also claiming the 1978 AIAW crown.
