FEDERAL WAY, Wash. – The Pac-12 conference championships began on Wednesday night with the swimming of the 200-yard medley relay and 800-yard freestyle at the Weyerhaeuser King County Aquatic Center.
"Our 800 free relay was excellent tonight, we'll probably look to move some things around in the 200 medley relay before NCAA's, though," said the Goldman Family Director of Men's Swimming Ted Knapp. "I was also very pleased to see Hank Poppe and Daniel Roy swim NCAA cuts in their respective events."
The evening started with the 200-yard medley relay – the Cardinal quartet of Ryan Dudzinski, Matt Anderson, Abrahm DeVine and Cole Cogswell (1:24.71) finished fifth. Stanford finished the night strong in the 800-yard freestyle relay with the team of Will Macmillan, Jack Levant, Mason Gonzalez and James Murphy (6:15.35) swimming A-cut for second place.
Stanford added two more NCAA qualifiers in the 100- and 200-yard breaststrokes. Roy (1:53.21) swam a time that will earn himself an invite to the NCAA Championships in the 200 breast while Poppe (52.19) swam a personal best in the 100 breast to earn a place at the national meet.
Stanford sits in second place with 160 points behind Arizona State (187) and ahead of Cal (137), Arizona (129), USC (99) and Utah (99). The team standings include points from last week's Pac-12 diving championships.
The Pac-12 championships continue Thursday morning with the first morning preliminary session, which starts at 11 a.m. and includes the 500-yard freestyle, 200-yard individual medley and 50-yard freestyle. The evening session, which also includes the 200-yard freestyle relay, begins at 6 p.m. Live results will be available at GoStanford.com.
