CHAMPAIGN, Ill. - Matching up against No. 5 Minnesota and No. 6 Illinois from Champaign, Ill. on the Fighting Illini's Senior Day, No. 2 Stanford placed second to the host school in a battle of top-six squads.
Illinois recorded a season-best 413.050 to top the Cardinal at 411.650, followed by Minnesota at 404.750.
The Cardinal began the day with a rough run on the pommel horse, with Joey Ringer notching the top score of 13.750 to take second overall. Stanford managed just a 62.950 – the lowest score of the year – after counting three falls early in the rotation.
Though it was put it in an early hole, the Cardinal did well to compete the rest of the way, finishing with a team score of 68.900 on the still rings. Josiah Eng and Trevor DiGerolamo both turned in scores in the 14s, with Eng going for a 14.350 and DiGerolamo 14.200 to claim second and third overall, in that order. Freshman Ian Gunther also showed well, finishing with a 13.800 to take fourth.
The scores continued to get better in the third rotation, as Stanford combined for a 68.950 on the floor. Connor Lewis managed a 14.250 to take third overall, followed by Ryan Sheppard at 14.000, and Bryan Perla and Brody Malone with scores of 13.950 each to highlight the effort.
Finishing on three of its better events, Stanford made a run at the comeback, beginning on parallel bars. Sheppard went for a season-high 14.600 to win the event and claim the second-best score of the year for Stanford. Blake Sun was second overall for the Cardinal with a career-high tying 14.550, followed by Grant Breckenridge with a score of 14.300 to take fourth. Turning in an all-around quality rotation, Thomas Lee (13.800) and Jacob Barrus (13.700) rounded out the Stanford five as the Card tallied a season-best 70.950.
Malone highlighted the high bar run for Stanford, posting an impressive 14.600 to win the event. David Jessen followed with a season-best 14.150 to take fourth overall as Stanford finished the event with a team score of 68.600. Sheppard ended what proved to be a good day in the event, scoring 13.700 on the high bar.
Consistently hitting 70-plus in the vault all year, Stanford once again reached that plateau, notching a 71.200 behind four vaults of 14.250 or better. Malone led the pack with a 14.450 to claim third, followed by Lewis (14.300), and Perez and Breckenridge (14.250). Proving strength in the event, Perla finished fifth in the Cardinal lineup with a score of 13.950 out of the anchor position.
The Cardinal will return home next week, hosting Air Force on March 8 at 7 p.m. from Burnham Pavilion.
