STANFORD, Calif. – No. 2 Stanford secured a season-best 70.500 on high bars and freshman Brody Malone won his third all-around title against Cal and reigning World Champion Japan on Saturday in the International Collegiate Open.
Watched by a near-capacity and highly-entertained crowd of 950 at Burnham Pavilion, Japan won the meet with a score of 424.500. The Cardinal finished second at 419.350 and the Bears third 395.850.
"It was a good showing," said Stanford head coach Thom Glielmi. "We're still improving and that's the plan as we keep pushing toward the NCAA Championships."
It marked the first five-up, five-count session of the year for the Cardinal.
"Previously, we had six-up, five-count," Glielmi said. "We counted three missed routines. To post a 419 says a lot about the potential of this team to be within striking distance of winning a national championship."
Malone captured the high bar, Connor Lewis claimed vault, and Bryan Perla and Bailey Perez finished second and third, respectively, in floor exercise.
"Brody is a soldier," said Glielmi. "He trains hard, he's focused and knows what he wants to do. It's nice to see from somebody so young."
"I thought Bryan did a great job on floor and vault. Thomas did a great job on rings and parallel bars. Those three really embraced the competition."
Former Cardinal great Akash Modi, the 2017 Emery Award winner and a 19-time All-American, was one of three who competed individually.
Stanford resumes competition on March 2 in Champaign, Ill., when it faces No. 4 Minnesota and No. 5 Illinois.
