STANFORD, Calif. - In a rematch of the 2018 NCAA championship, No. 4 Stanford and No. 7 Vanderbilt will square off in a marquee nonconference contest on Saturday afternoon at Taube Family Tennis Stadium.
Nine months ago in Winston-Salem, North Carolina, Stanford outlasted Vanderbilt 4-3 in the NCAA final, matching its improbable 2016 national championship run as the lowest-seeded team at No. 15 to win it all. The Cardinal won its 19th NCAA crown in school history despite losing the doubles point, as Melissa Lord provided a thrilling three-set clincher.
Both teams will be looking for a signature win to maintain their position among the nation's top-10. The Commodores (4-2) will first play at California on Friday to open their West Coast road swing.
NCAA championship rematches are nothing new for Stanford (5-1), which has appeared in each of the last three national finals. In February 2017, Stanford defeated Oklahoma State in Orlando after the Cardinal knocked off the Cowgirls in the 2016 NCAA title match. In February 2018, Florida squeaked past Stanford at Taube Family Tennis Stadium in the team's first meeting since the Gators beat the Cardinal to claim the 2017 crown.
Stanford, which has been idle since a loss to Georgia on Feb. 11, has won four of the last six meetings against Vanderbilt but the matchups have consistently been extremely competitive.
It's the first of two pivotal weekends for Stanford, which welcomes another top-10 opponent to The Farm when No. 9 Texas visits on March 2. The Cardinal has already pocketed a victory against the Longhorns, prevailing 4-3 two weeks ago in the quarterfinals of the ITA National Team Indoor Championships.
Stanford leads the country with eight players appearing in the singles rankings, led by No. 16 Michaela Gordon (11-6 overall, 3-1 duals) and No. 19 Emily Arbuthnott (18-4 overall, 5-1 duals). Meanwhile, No. 59 Caroline Lampl (14-6 overall, 5-0 duals) is riding a seven-match winning streak and stands 10 victories shy of 100 for her career.
The Cardinal is also well represented with four ranked doubles teams. Lampl and Kimberly Yee (10-4 overall, 4-0 duals) check in at No. 12 while Arbuthnott and Gordon (7-3 overall, 2-0 duals) are right behind at No. 15.
