Four Advance at Winter Cup

Four Stanford-affiliated gymnasts have advanced to Sunday's final at the 2019 Winter Cup based on scores in Friday's preliminary session. Senior Grant Breckenridge will be joined by alumni Robert Neff, Akash Modi and Eddie Penev in Sunday's competition from Las Vegas, Nev.

The quartet is vying for positions on the U.S. Senior National Team and to represent the U.S. in future competitions. Neff and Modi finished the all-around portion of the competition in fifth and seventh, respectively, and according to an email following the preliminary session, both have received automatic National Team selections. Oklahoma's Yul Moldauer nabbed the all-around title with his 84.500 score, edging out Sam Mikulak of Newport Beach, Calif./U.S. Olympic Training Center, by just a 0.050 margin (84.450). Moldauer's teammate Allan Bower of Chandler, Arizona/University of Oklahoma, was third at 82.350. Fourth (82.300) and fifth (81.800) went to Genki Suzuki of North Wales, Pa./University of Oklahoma, and Neff, respectively. Sean Melton of Orlando, Fla./Ohio State University, was sixth at 81.750, followed by Modi at 81.500.

With the athletes above all receiving automatic National Team qualifying bids, there are five slots remaining on Sunday.
