CHICAGO – No. 10-ranked and No. 9-seeded Stanford dropped a 4-2 decision to No. 13-ranked and No. 8-seeded Virginia in the ITA National Indoor Championships Friday afternoon at the Midtown Athletic Club.
The Cardinal will continue play on Saturday, facing Tulane in the consolation draw of the 16-team tournament at 1:30 p.m. PT. Stanford defeated Tulane during ITA Kick-Off Weekend last season.
The Cardinal (5-2) captured the doubles point, as Axel Geller and Alexandre Rotsaert dropped just one game on their way to a 6-1 victory at No. 1. Sameer Kumar and Timothy Sah sealed the point with a 6-4 victory at No. 2.
Virginia (8-1) responded with three consecutive wins in singles play, as the Cavaliers got straight-set victories at No. 3, No. 5 and No. 6.
Senior Sameer Kumar snapped UVA's momentum, with a 6-2, 6-4 win at No. 4. Kumar, coming off a clincher at USC last Friday, is 2-1 in dual play this spring.
Virginia responded once again, however, as Carl Soderlund defeated Axel Geller at No. 1, 6-4, 7-5, to clinch the match for the Cavaliers.No. 13 Virginia 4, No. 10 Stanford 2
