STANFORD, Calif. – No. 10 Stanford captured the doubles point and posted wins at No. 2, No. 3 and No. 5 singles, to earn a 4-1 victory over UCF in its first match of the ITA Kick-Off Weekend event Saturday afternoon at Taube Tennis Stadium.
Stanford (3-0) will face Oregon, a 4-1 winner of Minnesota, on Sunday at 11 a.m. Sunday's winner will advance to the ITA National Indoor Championships in Illinois.
In doubles action, the Cardinal broke a 4-4 tie at No. 1 and a 3-3 tie at No. 2 to seize control of both matches and capture the point. At No. 2, Sameer Kumar and Timothy Sah broke the 3-3 tie and didn't let up there, posting a 6-3 win. At No. 1, Axel Geller served an ace to put he and teammate Alex Rotsaert up, 5-4. The duo later sealed the doubles point for the Cardinal with a 7-5 win.
Kumar gave Stanford a 2-0 lead with a straight-set win at No. 5. Rotsaert followed with a win at No. 2, and Genesen provided the clincher with a 6-0, 2-6, 6-2 victory at No. 3.
Stanford moves on to face the Ducks. Oregon is 3-0 on the season with victories over Idaho (7-0), Seattle (7-0) and Saturday's victory over the Gophers.No. 10 Stanford 4, UCF 1
