STANFORD, Calif. - Sophomore Emily Arbuthnott is the lone Cardinal player remaining through the first two days of the NCAA Singles and Doubles Championship.
Arbuthnott rallied for a 4-6, 6-4, 6-3 victory over Florida's Josie Kuhlman on Thursday afternoon to reach Friday's round of 16. Arbuthnott, who upped her overall record to 29-8 this season, also improved to 12-2 over her career in three-set matches.
Freshman Michaela Gordon's impressive campaign came to an end in the second round, falling to Texas Tech's Gabriela Talaba 6-1, 3-6, 7-6 (5). Gordon was named the ITA National Rookie of the Year, becoming the Cardinal's first recipient since Kristie Ahn in 2011. Stanford's highest-ranked player at No. 15 in the country, Gordon finished 22-11 overall and 12-9 in duals, playing all of her matches at the No. 1 spot of the lineup.
Also honored as the Pac-12 Freshman of the Year, Gordon provided four clinchers and finished 11-3 against Pac-12 opponents and 9-9 against nationally-ranked foes. Gordon captured the ITA Northwest Regional Championships singles title in her collegiate debut.
Arbuthnott and Gordon were also eliminated as a doubles team, falling 6-3, 6-3 to Wake Forest's Chandler Carter and Emma Davis in the first round.
The nation's No. 3-ranked duo, Arbuthnott and Gordon finished 17-8 overall and 9-6 in duals, playing every match at the top spot of the lineup. Arbuthnott and Gordon finished 9-5 against nationally-ranked opponents and claimed the Oracle ITA National Fall Championships title in November.
