WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. - Sophomore Emily Arbuthnott's postseason run came to an end Friday morning at the NCAA Singles Championships, falling 6-2, 6-4 to Vanderbilt's Astra Sharma.
Arbuthnott reached the round of 16 after defeating South Carolina's Ingrid Gamarra Martins 6-3, 7-5 in the first round before outlasting Florida's Josie Kuhlman 4-6, 6-4, 6-3 in the second round.
Ranked No. 43 nationally, Arbuthnott (29-9 overall, 17-3 duals) closed out the season tied for the team lead in victories while compiling an 11-2 mark at the No. 4 spot. An All-Pac-12 honorable mention pick, Arbuthnott provided a team-best eight clinching points, produced a 12-2 record in three-setters and was 12-6 against nationally-ranked foes.
Paired with freshman Michaela Gordon as the nation's No. 3-ranked duo, Arbuthnott and Gordon finished 17-8 overall and 9-6 in duals, playing every match at the top spot of the lineup. Arbuthnott and Gordon finished 9-5 against nationally-ranked opponents and claimed the Oracle ITA National Fall Championships title in November.
