LOS ANGELES - No. 14 Stanford once again relied on its lower-lineup depth, defeating No. 28 UCLA 4-3 on Friday afternoon in the Pac-12 opener for both teams.
The Cardinal (8-1) was playing the first road game of a stretch that features six of its next nine away from The Farm.
Despite losing the doubles point, Stanford roared back to seize a 3-1 lead and secure the match thanks to Emily Arbuthnott's fourth clincher of the season.
Stanford has won nine of its last 11 matches in which it loses the doubles point, dating back to last season.
Trailing 1-0, the Cardinal booked wins from Caroline Lampl, Melissa Lord and Emily Higuchi.
After UCLA (6-5) crept to within 3-2, Arbuthnott defeated Gabby Andrews 4-6, 6-3, 6-2 on court five to give Stanford its fourth straight win.
Head coach Lele Forood, who has guided Stanford to eight NCAA titles, is four victories away from 400 in her career.
The Cardinal will next face No. 21 USC on Saturday in a 12 p.m. match that will be televised on Pac-12 Networks.
