STANFORD, Calif. – Despite limiting Akash Modi and Robert Neff, the second-ranked Cardinal put up a phenomenal showcase Saturday night as it took second in its annual International Challenge. Japan took first with a score of 425.800 followed by Stanford with a 421.550, No. 6 Minnesota at 405.600 and Canada at 392.700.
The Cardinal (11-1) opened up the meet on pommel horse where it immediately posted its best score of the season with a 69.450 to take the team title by over two points. Akash Modi led the way for Stanford with a 14.700 that would prove to be the best on the day as Modi collected his 12th event title of the year.
Rings awaited next that David Jessen opened for Stanford with a career-best 13.500 that Taylor Seaton followed with a 13.900 before back-to-back stuck landings by Jordan DeClerk and Josiah Eng followed. With its 70.050 on rings the Cardinal posted its second-best team score of the season while Josiah Eng took to the podium with after placing third with a 15.100.
Grant Breckenridge and Taylor Seaton led the way in the next event with both posting a 14.550 – a season-high for Breckenridge. Minnesota proved its worth in the event though as the Golden Gophers posted two of the top-three scores while taking the first team event by an NCAA team from the Cardinal with a 71.900.
Jordan DeClerk stepped up for the Cardinal next in parallel bars with a season-best 14.750 to finish sixth in the event. Even without Akash Modi in the line-up for the event, the Cardinal still stepped up to collect its best team score on parallel bars this season, amassing a 70.800 to best its 70.700 that was also posted in Burnham Pavilion at the Stanford Open (Jan. 21).
With the Cardinal on the heels of Japan headed to high bar, Stanford opened the event with three solid scores. A fall plagued the Cardinal next with the meet being the first of the season with the five-up, five-count. Akash Modi closed out the event with a stellar 14.500, but Stanford posted its lowest team total on the event on the season with a 67.950.
Last up the Cardinal took to the floor to close out the meet, which it did in fashion as it opened up with a career-best 14.150 from Bailey Perez and season-bests from Taylor Seaton (14.650) and Jacob Barrus (14.850) to post a 71.850 team score.
Next up, the Cardinal will host its biggest test of the year with the back-to-back defending NCAA champions, No. 1 Oklahoma coming to Burham Pavilion. The meet is set for 4 p.m. on Saturday, March 4.
