Opener at Sunken

STANFORD, Calif. - A rainout earlier this week has pushed up the home opener for Stanford baseball as the Cardinal now host Cal Poly at 7 p.m. on Thursday, followed by a three-game set with Kansas beginning on Friday. The rescheduled game with the Mustangs was relocated to The Farm after a washout on Monday in San Luis Obispo. 
 

Advisory: Arrive by 1:30 p.m. on Saturday for a special pregame ceremony.

Series History vs. Kansas 
Overall: 18-3 (.833) • First meeting in 2004
» All 21 games of the series have been played at Sunken Diamond.
» Stanford has won five straight in the series after a sweep last season when the Cardinal won 2-0, 10-4 and 6-2 in its first series after Finals (March 18-20).
» These two teams have now met in each of the last three seasons. 
» Prior to that, Kansas and Stanford met for four straight years (2004-07). Stanford swept the series in 2004, 2005 and 2007. Kansas earned its only series win with two victories in 2006.

» The Cardinal, which finished 31-23 in 2016, has posted a .500 season or better in 38 of the first 40 seasons under head coach Mark Marquess. Coach Marquess is 14 wins from becoming the fourth coach in Division I history with 1,600 career wins (fifth person ever).
» Stanford held its opponent to two or fewer runs 23 times last year and went 22-1 in those contests. Stanford is 0-1 this season in that scenario—a 1-0 defeat on Opening Day.
» The Cardinal is 23-4 when out-hitting its opponent since 2016.

Stanford Streaks 
» Senior Jack Klein has played in all but four games over the last three seasons. 
» Junior Matt Winaker has played in 71 straight games. The last time he did not enter Coach Marquess' lineup was April 28, 2015 vs. SJSU). 
Winaker has gone 68 straight games without an error (last was May 3, 2015 at Oregon). Since then, he's been perfect on all 598 chances. For his career, Winaker has made just two errors in 107 games and 942 chances.
» Junior Quinn Brodey has started 67 consecutive games for the Cardinal — last time he was not in starting lineup was May 5, 2015 vs. Santa Clara.
» Junior outfielder Quinn Brodey's 14-game hit streak at the end of last season (ended in final series of the year against Oregon) was the longest of the year for the Cardinaland the longest for a Stanford player since current Cincinnati Reds prospect Alex Blandino hit safely in 24 straight in 2014.

» Will Matthiessen appeared as a defensive replacement at first base on Saturday, and then retired all six batters he faced in his college pitching debut on Sunday.
» Reliever Jack Little struck out the side in his inning of work last week.
» Andrew Daschbach is 2-for-2 with a double and RBI after his first two career at-bats—he was a pinch-hitter in both instances.
» Relievers Zach Grech (1.0 inn) and Erik Miller (3.2 inn) also made their first appearances as Cardinal against Fullerton.

» Stanford was one of three teams with three players on the Golden Spikes Award preseason watch list (TCU, Florida)—junior Colton Hock, junior Quinn Brodey and sophomore Tristan Beck.

» Hock was also named to the NCBWA Stopper of the Year preseason watch list.

» Stanford plays 30 of its 54 games at Sunken Diamond.

Last Time Out
» On Opening Day, sophomore Kris Bubic was perfect through four, held a no-hitter into the sixth and struck out a career-high 10 batters, but No. 8 Fullerton tallied the game's only run.
» On Saturday, Fullerton (2-0) opened up a 6-0 lead after five innings and kept the Cardinal hitless until the sixth. Stanford had five freshmen (three pitchers) make their college debuts and fell 8-1.
» In the finale, Fullerton again scored the first six. But Stanford chipped away and it was 6-4 heading to the ninth. With two strikes and two outs, Quinn Brodey hit a game-tying double. Matt Winaker had the game-winning RBI with a double in the 11th inning for a 7-6 victory.
