LAS VEGAS – Four Cardinal have been named to the U.S. Senior Men's National Team after their performances at the annual Winter Cup Challenge. Akash Modi took second in the all-around to automatically qualify to compete in the AT&T America Cup on March 4 in Newark, N.J.
Joining Modi on the U.S. Senior Men's National Team are current teammates Grant Breckenridge and Robert Neff as well as Cardinal alum Eddie Penev ('13).
Modi finished second overall for the second year with a combined overall score of 171.050 after posting a field-leading score of 86.300 in the preliminary round on Thursday, which he followed with an 84.740 in the finals.
On the weekend Modi finished second on parallel bars (29.100), second on high bar (27.859), third on floor (28.650), tied for fifth on vault (28.900), eighth on pommel horse (28.300) and eighth on rings (28.250).
Robert Neff finished a career-best sixth overall with a 163.950 and a seventh place finish on parallel bars (27.550), ninth place finish on floor (28.000), 10th on high bar (26.650), 15th on pommel horse (26.600), tied for 15th on vault (28.150) and 21st on rings (27.000).
Grant Breckenridge was right on Neff's heels as he also finished a career-best seventh overall with a 163.750 and tied for third on high bar (27.700), 10th on floor (27.800), 11th on parallel bars (26.900) tied for 11th on vault (14.100), tied for 17th on pommel horse (26.150) and 22nd on rings (26.800). Breckenridge's 83.550 all-around score in the finals is also his highest of the season.
Former Cardinal Eddie Penev also made a strong showing to make the U.S. Men's Senior Team finishing 28th overall with an incredible first place finish on floor with a 29.950 and 10th on vault with a 28.450.
The Cardinal looks ahead to next weekend where it will host the International Collegiate Challenge as on Saturday, Feb. 25. Meet time is set for 4 p.m. at Burnham Pavilion. Fans can watch live here.
