Second to None

STANFORD, Calif. - Different day, same result as the second-ranked Cardinal hosted its 25th annual Stanford Open against No. 8 Cal and Washington Saturday night to a packed Burnham Pavilion. The night saw Stanford sweep both team and individual event titles again with Akash Modi claiming the all-around, floor, pommel horse and parallel bars titles while adding a season-high 423.600 team score.

Starting off on the floor, the Cardinal (2-0, 2-0 MPSF) hit the ground running, claiming six out of the top-10 scores in the event. Modi led with a season-best 15.000 to claim the title with Robert Neff taking second with a 14.700. Jacob Barrus, Grant Breckenridge and Taylor Seaton took fourth, fifth and sixth as Stanford dominated the event with a 72.500 to best its score from last year's Stanford Open.

On pommel horse Modi again led the way with a 14.800 for the title, but Joey Ringer threw down a personal best 13.750 as the rookie took second in the event. Fellow freshman David Jessen tied for fourth with teammate Andrew Misiolek as Grant Breckenridge and Drew Willoughby added 6th and 7th place finishes. The Cardinal collected a 68.100 as a team, which betters its season-opening score and topped its nearest opponent by nearly five points.

Still rings saw Josiah Eng continue his domination of the event, as he claimed his second consecutive event title with a 14.950, besting last week's score of 14.500. Akash Modi and Robert Neff took second and third in the event as well with Neff adding a 14.050 to crush his score of 13.350 from the previous week. The Cardinal's score of 71.300 also dominated the season-opening score, with nearly every Cardinal improving on his score.

Defending vault winner from last week Barrett Weiss was usurped by his own teammate as Taylor Seaton floored a phenomenal 15.000 in his best score since the NCAA Preliminaries last year. Modi, as always in the hunt, took second with a 14.650 while Grant Breckenridge claimed third with a 14.450. Stanford was the only team to pass the 70 mark as a team, posting a 72.400.

Akash Modi wasn't to be challenged in the next event as the NCAA parallel bars champion added another title to his tally with a 14.900. Stanford was on point in the event, taking first through fifth place while the Cardinal placed all six athletes in the top 10 with a team score of 70.700.

In the final event of the night, freshmen David Jessen crushed a 14.250 on high bar to add a career-best and first event title to his name. Akash Modi and Robert Neff tied for second while Jacob Barrus and Taylor Seaton helped round out the top-10 in the event at sixth and tied for eighth respectively. The Cardinal closed out with a 68.600 in the event, the only one Stanford didn't better from the season opener.

In the all-around Akash Modi dominated with a 88.150, bettering his season-opening score by a point. The all-around was a clean sweep for Stanford on the night as Robert Neff added an 83.050 for second and Grant Breckenridge rounded it out with a career-best 81.650 for third.

Next up the Cardinal hits the road as it travels to face the Air Force Academy in two weeks on February 4 in Colorado Springs, Colo.
