STANFORD, Calif. – Freshman Tristan Beck was sensational and received plenty of offensive support as Stanford baseball toppled Pac-12 rival Cal, 5-1, at Sunken Diamond on Friday night.
Beck, who struck out eight of the first nine batters and did not allow a base runner until the fourth, allowed just three hits in seven scoreless innings. He finished with nine strikeouts and did not issue a walk.
Meanwhile, the Stanford offense tallied three runs in the first, and added a pair in the fourth on a two-run home run by junior Jack Klein.
In its first at-bat, the Cardinal used three straight singles to load the bases. Sophomore Quinn Brodey laced one through the legs of the first baseman to score two, and Duke Kinamon knocked another home with a sacrifice fly.
Klein's career-high third home run of the year -- all at Sunken Diamond -- put the Cardinal on top, 5-0 after four innings.
That was more than enough for Beck (5-4), who struck out the first two hitters of the game, and then struck out six in a row as he retired the side on strikes in the second and third innings.
Cal avoided the shut out with a run on a double and single in the eighth, but sophomore Colton Hock shut down the Bears in the ninth to seal the win.
NOTABLES: Matt Winaker's 10-game hit streak ended -- it was the longest of his career and the longest of the season for a Cardinal ... Alex Dunlap singled in the first and has reached base in 16 straight games, extending the longest of the season for a Cardinal.
NEXT UP: Newly-appointed Anne and Joseph Taylor Director of Men's Basketball Jerod Haase will throw out the first pitch of the series finale with Cal. Game time is at 7 p.m. on the Pac-12 Networks.
