STANFORD, Calif. – Junior Tommy Edman had the go-ahead RBI single in the bottom of the eighth to propel Stanford baseball to a 3-1 win over UC Davis on Tuesday night at Sunken Diamond.
It was Stanford's second victory of the night as the teams also completed a suspended game from March 21, which the Cardinal won, 14-9. The two triumphs improved Stanford to 27-21 on the year to guarantee a .500 season or better for the 38th time in the 40 seasons under head coach Mark Marquess.
Freshman Duke Kinamon gave the Cardinal a 1-0 lead in the bottom of the fourth. Edman led off with a double and scored when Kinamon laced a single through the left side.
Freshman Kris Bubic maintained that lead for the Cardinal. The Aggies loaded the bases with one out in the fifth on two singles and a walk. However, Bubic got a a pop out and ground out to escape the game and keep the Cardinal in the lead.
UC Davis (16-31) eventually tied the game with a two-out rally in the seventh. Bubic retired the first two batters, but a walk and two singles evened the score at 1-1.
Bubic, who struck out three, scattered six singles and allowed just one earned run in 6.2 innings, was relieved with a pair on base. Sophomore Keith Weisenberg got a ground ball to get out of the inning.
Weisenberg (1-0) also got the Cardinal out of a jam in the eighth when he forced a fly out with two outs and the go-ahead run at third. That set up the late game heroics from Edman with some insurance from Quinn Brodey.
Sophomore Matt Winaker singled to lead off the home half of the eighth. He was sacrificed to second by Nico Hoerner, and then Edman pushed one up the middle for a 2-1 lead. One batter later, Brodey, doubled off the centerfield wall to give the Cardinal a two-run cushion.
Weisenberg closed out his second career victory with a perfect ninth.
SUSPENDED GAME: Stanford led 12-9 heading into the final inning of the suspended game. Carter led off the top of the ninth with a single and scored on a long home run from Quinn Brodey for a 14-9 lead. Colton Hock pitched a scoreless ninth to seal the victory.
