AUSTIN, Texas – Seven players had multiple hits as the Stanford offense came alive and combined with a strong outing from junior Brett Hanewich to earn an 11-1 victory and four-game series split at #23 Texas on Sunday afternoon.
Stanford, which finished with a season-high 15 hits, improved to 5-3 on the year with four wins over Top 25 opponents.
The Cardinal loaded the bases on a pair of walks and an infield single in the top of the first. Then with two outs, sophomore Matt Winaker dropped in a single to right center which scored two. Moments later, freshman Nico Hoerner walked home on a balk for an early 3-0 lead.
Hanewich, who earned his second win in as many starts this season, stranded five runners over the first three innings. He left runners at third in both the first and third innings with inning-ending strikeouts.
The Texas offense brought home a run on a triple in the fourth, but Hanewich escaped further damage. With runners on first and third, he induced a double play to end the inning. He allowed just one run and five hits over 6.1 innings.
Stanford tacked on to its lead with a pair of two-out, run-scoring hits in the sixth. Freshman Brandon Wulff, who recorded the first two hits of his career, doubled to deep left center and scored on sophomore catcher Bryce Carter's single up the middle. Carter then came all the way around when Tommy Edman doubled off the 375-foot marker on the left centerfield wall.
Carter singled home another run in the eighth, and later scored on a two-run double by junior Mikey Diekroeger.
In the ninth, Jonny Locher, who entered as a pinch runner in the eighth, lifted one over the left centerfield wall for a three-run homer and an 11-1 advantage.
Stanford's 11 runs were the most since a 12-6 victory over Cal on April 12 of last season.
The Cardinal returns home for a Tuesday matchup with St. Mary's. First pitch from Sunken Diamond is set for 5:30 p.m.
